Overview

LONGi's Jiaxing solar-module factory provides a concrete case of artificial intelligence changing frontline manufacturing work. This Evidence Brief traces the shift from experience-heavy visual inspection toward machine vision, machine learning, traceability and full-process AI quality systems. It examines how repetitive detection is increasingly automated while workers remain involved in checking flagged defects and interpreting production context.

The report centers on Zhang Chen's documented transition from quality inspector to AI trainer in 2023, and uses later local reporting on quality-AI work and technical-worker training as supporting evidence. These individual pathways show how tacit manufacturing expertise can become input to model training, verification and process improvement; they do not establish workforce-wide transition rates.

Factory-wide transformation outcomes, inspection-system efficiency measures, labour-input measures and worker outcomes are kept analytically distinct. Lower manpower allocation and a worker-reported inspection labour-cost reduction are not layoff counts. LONGi's later enterprise workforce contraction occurred amid a photovoltaic-industry downturn, and the reviewed evidence does not isolate the contribution of Jiaxing AI inspection.

For manufacturing leaders, CHROs, quality teams and policymakers, the case highlights destination-role reskilling, human verification, knowledge transfer and the need to measure who benefits from automation. Formal override rights, wages, transition guarantees and the distribution of outcomes across affected workers remain evidence gaps.

Key messages

  • AI quality inspection substitutes repetitive visual detection while human workers double-check flagged defects in the reported workflow.
  • Zhang Chen's inspector-to-AI-trainer transition shows a concrete pathway for using frontline domain expertise in AI systems; it does not show the transition rate for all inspectors.
  • Tacit production knowledge can support model training, exception handling, root-cause investigation and quality-system improvement.
  • Factory-wide cost, yield and lead-time outcomes reflect a broader Lighthouse transformation and cannot be attributed solely to quality inspection.
  • Reduced inspection labour cost and manpower allocation do not establish an equivalent number of workers laid off.
  • Reskilling pathways need destination roles and worker-outcome measurement. Formal human override rights and population-level career outcomes remain unspecified.
