What it means
Define the real decision, audience, constraints, success evidence, and where AI should or should not help.
Why it matters in AI-enabled work
AI can produce a polished answer before the real decision is defined. Clear framing keeps effort attached to the right problem and makes proportional AI use possible.
What strong practice looks like
A strong practitioner starts with the decision and context, then chooses the task and tool. They make boundaries, risks, and success evidence visible before opening AI.
Common failure modes
- Starting with a prompt before clarifying the decision or audience.
- Using AI automatically when a human-led step would be clearer or safer.
- Delivering polished work that answers an incomplete or misplaced question.
Development practices
- 1Write a five-line brief covering the problem, audience, decision, constraints, and success evidence.
- 2Label each stage of one task as AI-supported, human-led, or human-approved.
- 3Ask a colleague to challenge the framing before production begins.
