What it means

Why it matters in AI-enabled work

AI can perform several parts of a workflow quickly. Orchestration makes handoffs and human decisions visible so the work can be reviewed, repeated, and owned.

What strong practice looks like

A strong practitioner treats AI as one participant in a workflow rather than as a one-prompt replacement for the workflow. They define inputs, outputs, checkpoints, and a responsible owner.

Common failure modes

  • Expecting one prompt to perform research, interpretation, drafting, checking, and decision-making.
  • Leaving the handoff between AI output and human approval implicit.
  • Automating a stage before its quality criteria and fallback are clear.

Development practices

  1. 1Map one real task into purpose, input, AI role, human role, output, review point, and owner.
  2. 2Add an explicit fallback for a missing, uncertain, or poor-quality AI output.
  3. 3Ask another person to follow the workflow and identify where judgment changes the result.
