Synthesis and Original Contribution

Synthesis and Original Contribution is one of eight AIGW AI Fluency capabilities for responsible AI-enabled work, development, and implementation.

D7 / Capability guide

What it means

Compare, synthesize, interpret, and recommend so the final work adds value beyond generic AI output.

Why it matters in AI-enabled work

AI can generate many plausible options, increasing the value of human synthesis and original contribution. A clear human recommendation helps work support a real choice.

What strong practice looks like

A strong practitioner compares perspectives, adds evidence and judgment, makes a defensible choice, and identifies what they changed, rejected, interpreted, or recommended.

Common failure modes

  • Publishing a first draft or summary with little human interpretation.
  • Improving wording while leaving the underlying reasoning generic.
  • Presenting several options without making the decision or contribution visible.

Development practices

  1. 1Ask for alternatives, compare them with another source or view, and write your own synthesis.
  2. 2State explicitly what you added, changed, rejected, interpreted, and recommended.
  3. 3Invite review of the reasoning and contribution, not only the prose.

Relationship to the assessment

This capability is one dimension in the AIGW AI Fluency & Career Growth Assessment. The assessment offers developmental interpretation based on its current coded responses and scenario evidence; this public guide does not reveal items, answer keys, scoring weights, or private report logic.
